about

Cold as a Kitchen Floor is Marrakesh’s debut album. Its songs were preconceived back in 2016 and at that time the band believed that ‘three more months’ would be all it would take for the album to be recorded. Since, the band began a process of refinement of the records that would go on for almost one year. ‘I think we were just naïve to think that we would finish the album so quickly. Or maybe, if we hadn’t changed our minds so many times in regard to the direction the songs should take everything could be a lot quicker…’, says Matheus Castella, the band’s drummer.

The fact is that the care that the boys of Marrakesh had with the conception of their first album is as clear as day from the moment we hear it for the first time. ‘Void’, a melancholic romance that seems like it is being played from inside a spaceship opens the album without really letting us know where it is going. It’s only in ‘Moonhealing’ – the second track and first single – with its infectious hook, that we land on the grounds that the rest of the album will take place. Heavily processed vocals, synthesizers and electronic beats all entangle with organic timbres and take advantage of this this new world’s fertile soil. The beautiful sax lines and lyricism of ‘Late Blue’ make you feel a nostalgia of something not yet lived, while ‘Bae’ and ‘Try Out’ cause surprise with their rhythmic and harmonic change, showing how the band managed to shape in a creative fashion the uncertainties and insecurities that followed them throughout that year. ‘Mirage’, the last track, sounds really like a goodbye and its final riff puts us on a trip towards the unknown again. Cold as a Kitchen Floor is definitely a testament of a realized potential of one of the most promising and exciting bands that has appeared in the last years.

Composed and arranged entirely by the band’s five members the album has still the features of Gianlucca Pernechele (Sax), Gustavo Derenievicz (Acoustic Contrabass) and Gustavo Schirmer (Vocals & Synths), the album producer, who recorded and mixed it at his studio in Curitiba, Brazil. The mastering was done by Pedro Soares.
